Then Jesus said to them, “Don’t you understand this parable How then will you understand any parable? The farmer sows the word. Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—some thirty, some sixty, some a hundred times what was sown.”
- The 4 places where the seed falls represent the 4 ways people respond to God. It may apply to 4 different kinds of people. It may be the different times in our lives or how they are different areas of our lives and our willingness or resistance to apply God's message to them. Are you open to God when it comes to one area of your life, loving your neighbor, for example, but resistant to God when it comes to your marriage or your money? Jesus wants us to be good soil in all areas of our lives and at all times, not just when it's convenient.
- The same things worried people when Jesus was alive as they do now. Chasing the materialistic desires and selfish wants marginalize and drown God out. Protect yourself by keeping God the most important part of your life.
- Jesus wants us to listen carefully. To understand Jesus's message means we MUST respond. We must take action. If you listen casually, out of some kind of obligation, or for some other insincere reason, you will miss the point.
as much as they could understand. He did not say anything to them without using a parable. But when he was alone with his own disciples, he explained everything.
- Jesus didn't speak in parables to confuse people. He did it to challenge those who were sincerely seeking God. also, had Jesus spoken plainly from the beginning, His ministry could have been negatively affected by those who wanted him silenced.
